Northern
Michigan

After spending time with Amanda's relatives in Marquette,
we visited the Pictured Rocks by boat. This is "Miner's
Castle", which lost a turret a few years ago. Archways and
caves near the waterline.

Some of the multi-colored mineral-stained cliffs that give
the area its name.

A large archway that would be fun to kayak through.
This boat was too big for that, but it did enter a very narrow gap in
the cliffs.

A cliff point called "Indian Head".

A partly-fallen archway with a band of late-May snow
across the rocks.

A series of portruding cliffs named for their resemblance
to a row of battleships.

A most amazing white pine tree, growing on atop a narrow
column. Once an archway extended to the rocks on the left - it
collapsed, but the pine's roots remained (look closely), allowing the
tree to survive in this unlikely location.

Later in the weekend my Dad drove up. This is at
Canyon Falls on the Sturgeon River.

Bird sightings while fishing with Dad: Blackburnian
warbler (left) and Magnolia warbler (right).

consecutive evenings from Bill's living room.
