A snowy scene from the campus of Indiana University - the same day
they hosted and upset MSU in basketball.
It must have also been some kind of Greek rush event because there
were people screaming and cheering as
cars went down the road (not just for me, really!). (01/07/01)

A flock of pigeons above the Paoli, Indiana courthouse - a nice old
town square. (01/07/01)

Audobon State Park in Hendersonville, KY (across the Ohio River from
Evansville, IN)
Yes, there were lots of birds around! (01/07/01)

A herd of bison at Land Between the Lakes (KY/TN). This is a
restored prairie (most original prairie has grown
into woodland without grazers like buffalo and natural
wildfires).
It's a cold morning, so most of the bison are
lying down with their legs tucked under them, idly chewing their
cud.
The immense bison in the middle of the left
picture was the only one standing up. Then it nudged another
until it got up. The big one then lay down where
the other one had been (warm spot). Switching guard duty
maybe?

Isn't this period of economic prosperity wonderful? Here we have
the empty shops of Hickman, KY.
My guess is this street used to be near the river, but levees isolated
it and no one wanted to go here. (01/08/01)

A bald cypress swamp (note the "knees" or knobs) at Reelfoot National
Wildlife Refuge in TN.
In the air I watched two immature bald eagles (I think) circle around
each other.
Reelfoot Lake (which this frozen stream empties into) was formed when
the New Madrid
earthquake diverted the course of the Mississippi River away from
here.

A bridge across the Mississippi River at Memphis, and the evening
sky.
(01/08/01)

Beale Street in Memphis - home of many touristy Blues places.
Not much happening on a Monday night in January, if you can imagine
that. (01/08/01)

Here I'm sitting on a petrified tree in Flora, MS. An impressive
"petrified forest". (01/09/01)

A full moon shines over the sea at Gulfport, MS (near
Biloxi).
(01/09/01)

A forest path in the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary (south of Mobile).
Lush vegetation for mid-January, wouldn't you say? (01/10/01)

I bet this egret is getting really sick of me trudging around in his
bird sanctuary.
I only sent it flying to the other side of the pond three
times.
(01/10/01)
Nearby I found a dog tag lying in the path, so I'm e-mailing the owner
about it.

Dunes and the sea beyond, still at the bird sanctuary. (01/10/01)

French-influenced architecture means nice balconies in Mobile.
(01/10/01)

I watch the sunset near Pensacola. (01/10/01)

Wakulla Springs, FL. Fish were jumping all over the place this
morning! (01/11/01)

A view of THE Florida State University - hey, that's what the sign
said. (01/11/01)

Daffodills bloom in the Florida winter, at the state botanical gardens.
Hey, it's 60 degrees. They know what they're doing.
(01/11/01)

A large tree with Spanish Moss at the same gardens. (01/11/01)

The Earth Lodge, an on-site reconstruction of a Native American
dwelling
place near Macon, GA.
Also present were immense and symmetrically shaped temple mounds.
(01/11/01)

Graduate residence on the campus of the University of Georgia - not
bad for a dorm! (01/11/01)

Toccoa Falls, at the campus of Toccoa Falls College (GA), on a foggy
morning. (01/12/01)

Toccoa Falls splashes down between two large chunks of ice.
(01/12/01)

To the left, a view of Tallulah Gorge (GA).
To the right, a strange cat. It followed me around boldly enough
up at this lookout place, but was afraid to be petted unless I held
still.
I walked up to a wall that was covered with local pictures and news
articles. As I looked at the articles, the cat walked up beside
me,
put it's front paws against the wall, and moved its head to peer
closely
at one of the articles. I kid you not. (01/12/01)

Icicles hang from a mossy outcropping in northeastern GA.

Left: Snow and fog make for an interesting drive through Great
Smoky Mountain National Park.
Right: Tourists make the best of it - when given snow, they make
make snowmen. (01/12/01)
